Real Madrid will reportedly pay 40 million euros for Di Maria.
Real Madrid head race for Manchester United and Chelsea target Di Maria
According to Portugese daily Abola, Benfica winger Angel Di Maria is set to move to Real Madrid , despite interest from Premier League sides including Manchester United and Chelsea.
Reports in recent months claimed Chelsea had sent Frank Arnesen on scouting trips to watch Di Maria whilst Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sees him as a possible long term replacement for Ryan Giggs .
The Argentinian is now in his third season at Benfica and is enjoying another excellent term, having scored 8 goals so far and impressed during the Portugese side’s Europa League campaign.
He reportedly has a buyout clause of 40 million euros but Benfica will apparently accept a fee of close to 25 million.
Abola reports that Real Madrid are most likely to sign the 22 year-old, commenting that there have been “informal contacts” between the Spanish giants and Benfica.
In addition, Di Maria’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who has very good relations with Real Madrid and negotiated the world record deal which took Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernebeu last summer from Manchester United .
Following Franck Ribery ‘s statement that he will move to Spain if he leaves Bayern Munich, Di Maria moving to Real Madrid would leave both Manchester United and Chelsea scratching their heads in the search for additional left-sided options.
