LONDON — The English Football Association is set to celebrate its 150th anniversary by playing a friendly against fierce foe Argentina.
Before playing England in 2013 to mark the landmark, Argentina is also set to face the team in Europe next year, a person close to the talks, which are at an advanced stage, told The Associated Press on Thursday.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because the fixtures are yet to be finalized.
David Dein, who is international president of England’s bid to stage the 2018 World Cup, is in Argentina this week lobbying for support ahead of the December vote.
Argentina coach Diego Maradona is still loathed in England over the way he punched the ball into the net as his team won their 1986 World Cup quarterfinal.
