Champions League Today

The crucial second legs will be played today with the qualification to the semi-finals still open. There are plenty of Argentine players involved in this late stage of the tournament.

Messi & Gaby Milito will be in the lineup today at home against Arsenal.

Inter will take a one goal lead to Moscow for their game against CSKA.

Zanetti, Cambiasso, Samuel and Diego Milito will be in the lineup.

Hopefully our players will do well today.

Visca Barca!!!!!

Forza Inter!!!!!

    FORZA INTER !!!!!!

hopefully Diego is watching….. which i doubt will make a difference for Cuchu and Pupi, but I still hope he considers them.

I’m sure Diego will be watching.

I’m hoping that they continue to play great and at least make it to the CL final.

Their case for being in the WC squad will be alot stronger.

    Will it matter to Maradona?

  3. Chris says:

who knows… I still have faith though,

I hope they do make it to the CL final, AND win, I believe this is all Inter needs right? Champions league? They haven’t won one yet, right ?

They totally deserve it… Ron, do you have an idea when they will be meeting with Barca, if they win todays match ?

Inter won two European Cups (what today is called Champions League) in the 1960’s with an Argentine coach, Helenio Herrera.

If Barca and Inter advance today they will play against each other in the semi-finals.

Zanetti & Cambiasso giving good performances again.

Zanetti is constantly attacking down the left flank, participating in the play buildup and doing a good job defending his zone.

Cuchu is maintaining order in the midfield and providing good passes on the attack.

Argentina needs a midfield with players that can deliver quality balls to Messi and Higuain.

    It is that simple.

Long balls from Veron to Messi and Higuain is not the answer.

Messi CANNOT win a world cup all by himself. He needs help.

Argentina has the players that can help.

    Maradona is blind to them.

I’ll start by saying that I don’t agree with what Maradona is trying to do and I feel Argentina can play a hell of a lot better, but I’m starting to see that Maradona does have a plan.

Argentina against Germany was our best game for a while and Maradona started with the first line up I hadn’t hated under his tenure.

The formation was classic 4-4-2. The defense, he almost got right. Walter Samuel finally had a well-deserved start and although and I would have included Gabriel Milito, instead of Gabriel Heinze, it was a solid back four.

In midfield, regardless of formation, I see Mascherano and Di María as a must for very different reasons. Gutiérrez is hard to decide upon, in that he has never had attacking flair unlike his wing counterpart in Di Maria, but every time he puts on the albiceleste shirt, he plays at another level. I can still see reasons for taking him off and putting a versatile midfielder such as Lucho on, but I also see why Maradona likes him so I won’t criticise him for that choice

That leaves the last midfield position of Veron up for grabs. In a 4-4-2, names such as Cambiaso, Gago, Banega won’t make sense since, along with Mascherano, they are all number fives. You need a Veron, Pastore or Riquelme. I’d like to see Riquelme in the squad but when he chucked a tantrum and said he wouldn’t play I was partly relieved. His to good to ignore, which causes a coach selection head aces, but he never has the mental strength to produce when it really matters. Riquelme leaving was a blessing in disguise.

That then leaves Veron and Pastore as the two world-class players/playmakers that can keep up with Messi. Veron is slow and old, but in a 4-4-2 with the likes of four genuine centre backs and Marcherano, this doesn’t matter. I can see why Maradona keeps playing him. Having said this, I’d prefer Pastore.

Finally, in a 4-4-2 formation Messi and Higuain were perfectly placed.

People would say that Maradona is wasting Messi, but in a 4-4-2 formation he is not. Messi creates spaces for everyone with his mere presence, which is why Di-Maria had such a great game against Germany.

Now before anyone has a go, please note I’m only playing devils advocate. I think Argentina can play 4-3-3 with the players at hand and “really” use Messi.

For over a year, like everyone else on this blog, I was at a complete lost as to what the hell Maradona was doing. He knows what his doing now.
