Arsenal are leading the chase for Argentine midfielder Ever Banega
Arsene Wenger is determined to bring a holding midfielder to the club and with uncertainty surrounding the future of Fiorentina’s Felipe Melo, he is now set to switch his attentions to the Argentine star.
Banega, 21, joined Valencia from Boca Juniors for £15m at the start of 2008 but he failed to make an impression and was sent out on a season-long loan to Atletico Madrid.
Atletico are not expected to make the move a permanent one and Wenger is ready to pounce and make his second signing of the summer after bringing in Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.
Banega is determined to show he can compete at the highest level and has ruled out any chance of him going back to Valencia next season.
He said: “I will not return to Valencia, even though I still have a contract with them.”
