Callup list for Egypt game announced

The biggest news on this callup, which is not a surprise because it’s been discussed in the media for the past week, is the return of Fernando Cavenaghi to the national team. And to a lesser degree Lisandro Lopez, who is currently the top goal scorer in Portugal.

Somewhat of a surprise to me is Julio Cruz getting a callup. It’s hard to argue against it because of Cruz’ consistent goal scoring with Inter but it seems kind of pointless to me when you consider his age and long term possibilities with the national team.

  1. Cambiasso's Toupee says:

It looks like the coach is trying to make up for Aguero’s lack of size with a tall forward. I suppose on paper it makes sense to have someone who will get attention on corner kicks.

I tend to agree with you that it should be all young guys getting the international caps – I guess the Olympics is the final callup for Riquelme, right ? Gago & Cambiasso will be the QBs in the midfield. No more Aimar ? Fair enough, coach.

Basile likes to have tall center forwards on the team but I don’t see Cruz as a starter when there are better players like Cavenaghi and Lavezzi in this callup, besides it would be nice if Basile continued using young goal scoring talent instead of going with players whose time with the national team has come and gone.

Riquelme? If he stays healthy, Basile will surely take him to the next World Cup. Riquelme is untouchable as far as Basile is concerned.

I think Mascherano will continue to be the starting central midfielder, his form under Basile has been fantastic but Basile likes Gago alot so it could be possible that they both form a midfield partnership in the near future.
